Indian Android Users Get Search Engine Choice Screen, Alternate Billing Option and more

Google India today announced to bring several changes to the Android ecosystem in India. This is in accordance with the recent directives of The Competition Commission of India (CCI), where Google was fined Rs 1337 crores.

Here are the key changes:
  • Choice screen to select default search engine on initial device setup, similar to EU users
  • OEMs and others can now build and distribute non-compatible or forked Android variants
  • OEMs in India will be able to license individual Google apps for pre-installation
  • User choice billing available to all apps and games
  • Auto-updating capability for sideloaded apps and app stores
