The Aryans gradually began to penetrate eastward,
clearing dense forests and establishing "tribal" settlements along
the Ganga & Yamuna. As
riverine and inland trade flourished, many towns along the Ganga
became centers of trade, culture, and luxurious living. The
victory of good over evil is epitomized in the epic Ramayana
while
another Epic, Mahabharata spells out the concept of dharma and duty.
Indian history begins with the birth of the Indus Valley
Civilization in such sites as Mohenjo- Daro, Harappa, and Lothal, and
the coming of the Aryans.
By 600 B.C., sixteen such territorial powers including the Magadha,
Kosala, Kuru, and Gandhara stretched across the North India plains.
The Sultanate of Delhi was
established in 1206.Babar defeated Lodi at
Panipat, not far from Delhi, and so came to establish the Mughal
Empire in India.
British
rule in India began in the AD 1700s.Aurangzeb's death in 1707, many of his vassals
established themselves as sovereign rulers and

survived until 1857.
The
East India Company found itself transformed from an association of
traders to rulers exercising political sovereignty over a largely
unknown land and people.
